COVID-19 April 23 Update

Conversation with Vice President Mike Pence

  • He said the decline in growth rate of coronavirus cases was a tribute to great response of the American people.
  • The administration has been working from the beginning to make sure health care workers have had resources and support they need.
  • The good news is that no American who has required a ventilator has been denied one. It happened in Europe but it has been a great American accomplishment that it hasn’t happened here.
  • As numbers have begun to flatten, no one wants to reopen country more than the President. The President has issued guidelines on reopening the economy. These guidelines are data driven criteria for every state that would allow for a phased opening.
  • This three-phase process is fairly detailed and will not be discussed here but you can review the guidelines on both my Facebook page and my website, philipgunn.org.
  • This phase-in process can be implemented statewide or on a county-by-county basis.
  • The federal government will defer to the Governors as to the time of each respective state’s reopening.
  • If we are disciplined to continue on the path we are on, we can be well on our way back to normal by the end of May.
  • He was hopeful that vaccines will be available by the early part of 2021.
  • He is also optimistic that large portions of American economy should be ready to reopen soon.

Questions of the Vice President

  • I asked the Vice President to please give the states more flexibility and discretion on how to spend the federal dollars they are giving us.
  • The situation in each state is different, and local and state leaders know better where the needs are and where the money can be best used. A “one size fits all” approach to the spending of these dollars just does not fit each state well.
  • The Vice President understood and said they are going to give as much flexibility to disbursing federal dollars as the law allows.
  • If there are additional appropriations needed, they will seek to give more flexibility in future disbursements as well.
  • When asked about restoring the economy, the Vice President said the fastest way back is to put virus in past. The main hurdle is the virus.
  • Our focus needs to be on putting an end to the virus. He encouraged continuing social distancing. If we beat the virus, then in May or early June we can be in a fundamentally different place nationally.

Covid 19 FAQ page on my website philipgunn.org

  • As we have said, the number one area in which we have received questions has been unemployment. In fact, the number of questions has been so great that we felt the need to create a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
  • I am very proud to announce that my staff has worked very hard to create this FAQ page on my website philipgunn.org that addresses your unemployment questions.
  • I encourage you to go to my website if you have any questions pertaining to unemployment. It is very likely that someone else has already asked your question, and you can find the answer there.
