COVID-19 April 10 Update

Unemployment claims

  • After my update yesterday, I was notified of three different employers who have laid off large numbers of employees.
  • I want to remind you that MDES says that it will expedite the unemployment claims process if those employers will file claims on behalf of the employees.
  • Many employers are doing this as a service for their employees. Please enlist the help of your employer to do this if they are not already doing so.
  • Please send your questions through the Speaker’s office or through your state representative. This will help funnel all the questions through one portal, which should allow us to get answers to you more quickly.
  • The answers you receive are only as good as the information you provide. Please be sure to set forth all the facts pertaining to your individual situation so that the answers MDES gives you are accurate.

If you are waiting for test results

  • If you have been tested and are waiting for your results, it is essential to remain at home.
  • Do not go to work or leave home.
  • Stay in a specific room at home and avoid contact with other family members as much as possible.
  • These steps are important to prevent the possible spread of disease.

PPE

  • Facilities are allowed to order their own supplies. They do not have to request supplies through MEMA.
    • As soon as items are received, they’re delivered to areas on the Tier I and Tier III systems.
    • TIER I Facility – a hospital/long-term care facility actively treating a COVIDpositive patient
    • TIER III – Quarantine/Isolation Facilities run by other jurisdictions, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, other healthcare facilities, outpatient facilities, EMS and emergency managers.
  • If you have a business that would like to help in the COVID-19 fight and assist in other disasters in the future, they can register with MEMA at MSBEOC.org.

Thanks to healthcare providers

  • As we enter Easter weekend, I want to take a moment and thank all our healthcare providers.
  • They are on the front lines battling this crisis.
  • If it were not for them, this would be a whole lot worse than it is.
  • They are putting themselves in harm’s way to take care of us.
  • Too often, we take them for granted, so I want to specifically thank them for keeping Mississippi safe.

Thanks to the National Guard

  • Likewise, I want to thank the National Guard for what they are doing to keep us safe during this crisis.
  • Many of them have been placed on active duty to assist with retrieving and distributing supplies that become available.
  • They are taking time away from their families to help us, so I want to specifically thank them as well.

Update on number of cases.

  • 209 new cases reported yesterday.
  • Total cases statewide now number 2469.
  • Unfortunately, we now have 82 deaths. While most of the deaths have been above the age of 60, five of the deaths have been below the age of 60.
  • 47 outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

Call if you need help.

  • We have had phone calls to our office forwarded to our staff. If you need any help at all, please call us at 601-359-3300.
  • We have also set up an email address for you to ask questions or seek help. That address is [email protected].

Good Friday

  • As we enter into Easter Weekend, may we all remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us on this day and that because of that sacrifice, our sins are forgiven.
  • “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace; and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
