COVID-19 April 13 Update
Easter Storms
- This morning, we are all trying to assess the damage that occurred yesterday from the powerful storms that crossed our state.
- There seems to be extensive property damage in both north and south Mississippi from flooding and tornados.
- Sadly, we are aware of at least 11 deaths at this point. Please pray for those families.
- MEMA is already on the scene trying to help those who suffered loss.
- It is imperative that no one go site seeing. This violates the shelter-in-place order and creates unnecessary traffic in those areas where MEMA is trying to render aid.
- We are not aware of any unmet needs at this point, so there is no need for any of you to venture into these damaged areas.
- If you become aware of a need, let us know.
- MEMA was already spread thin fighting the coronavirus outbreak, so please continue to pray for them as they now fight on two fronts.

Beware of fraudulent schemes
- Sadly, you need to be aware that there are people who are trying to exploit others during this time of crisis.
- They are attempting to steal your personal information so that they can then steal your identity or worse.
- Please be very protective of your personal information like birthday and social security number.
- It is my understanding that the IRS NEVER conducts business via telephone. If you receive an unsolicited call from someone purporting to be with the IRS, DO NOT give them your personal information. Call the IRS on your own to verify.
- You should probably take similar precautions when dealing with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security when discussing any unemployment claim. If you receive an unsolicited call from someone purporting to be with MDES be very cautious about giving out any personal information. You should probably call MDES back to verify that the call is legitimate.
- You should probably take similar precautions when dealing with anyone else that calls you unsolicited and requests your personal information.
- There are some sorry people in this world that will try to take advantage of you during this time of stress and crisis. DO NOT be tricked by their schemes.
Update on number of cases.
- 161 new cases reported yesterday.
- Total cases statewide now number 2,942.
- Unfortunately, we now have 98 deaths. While most of the deaths have been above the age of 60, five of the deaths have been below the age of 60.
- 58 outbreaks in long-term care facilities.
