COVID-19 April 15 Update
How much longer
- I have been in discussions with the Department of Health about how much longer it will be before we see the peak of this crisis.
- The Department of Health believes we are closing in on the peak. While we are not there yet, we are hopeful that it will come soon.
- When that occurs, we will SLOWLY begin to see a return to normalcy.
- President Trump said he would like to see businesses begin reopening on May 1. I believe this is achievable.
- This morning, I had the privilege of participating in a conference call with an economist named by President Trump to serve on his economic recovery task force. This economist specifically named Mississippi as one of those states that can begin the economic recovery process early.
- He also believes that the next 6-8 weeks will determine the strength of the economy for years to come. If we do not get our economy back up and running within the next 6-8 weeks, we may suffer economically for a long, long time. He believes waiting until midJune to restart the economy will be disastrous.
- I earnestly believe we can BOTH protect the public health AND begin our economic recovery at the same time.
- We will be looking to do this as soon as it is safe to do so.
- We ask for your patience a little longer as we approach the peak.
Schools
- The Department of Health has recommended that school buildings remain closed for the rest of the semester.
- This DOES NOT mean that school has ended. Schools are expected to continue distance learning to the extent they can.
- We have received a lot of questions about how the school year will be finished out. As we understand it, each school district will develop a plan to make this happen and submit that plan to the Department of Education for approval.
Update on number of cases.
- 273 new cases reported yesterday.
- Total cases statewide now number 3360.
- Unfortunately, we now have 122 deaths.
- 66 outbreaks in long-term care facilities.
